South America’s first Bio-LNG plant begins operations in Chile

HAM Group and its subsidiary HAM Chile, in partnership with Empresas Lipigas, have launched South America’s first facility for upgrading and producing Bio-LNG. The plant, located in Chile’s Ñuble region, will convert biogas into liquid biomethane, which Lipigas will distribute to transport companies and industries across the country as part of Chile’s move toward cleaner energy, reports Bioenergy Insight.

The new plant uses a modular, container-based “plug and play” system made up of six interconnected units. Three of the units handle biogas treatment processes — including cleaning and liquefaction — while the remaining three manage essential services such as water and dry air supply. This design enabled faster installation and commissioning.

The Bio-LNG is produced from biogas generated at an anaerobic co-digestion facility that processes organic waste from the pork industry. In its first phase, the plant will treat 7,500 m³ of biogas per day, with plans to expand capacity to 16,500 m³ per day as operations grow.

The resulting biomethane will be used as a renewable fuel at Lipigas service stations, supplying truck fleets travelling across Chile and helping reduce emissions from the road transport sector.

HAM Group said the project strengthens its commitment to lowering emissions and promoting sustainability in both transport and industry. The Ñuble site joins the company’s existing Bio-LNG plants in Girona, Spain, and Faenza, Italy, and marks a significant expansion into Latin America. The company also confirmed that more projects in the region are in progress.
