Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the e-VITARA, a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) manufactured in India, at a programme in Hansalpur on Tuesday. The electric SUV is set to be exported to over 100 countries, representing a significant step forward in India’s journey towards self-reliance and sustainable transportation.
In a post on X, PM Modi stated, “Today marks a special moment in India’s pursuit of self-reliance and its emergence as a hub for green mobility. At the Hansalpur event, the e-VITARA BEV, made in India, will be flagged off and exported to over a hundred nations. In another major development for our battery ecosystem, hybrid battery electrode production will also begin at a plant in Gujarat.”
According to a release from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) dated August 24, the Prime Minister will also inaugurate the domestic manufacturing of hybrid battery electrodes in Hansalpur, Ahmedabad.
Maruti Suzuki had first introduced the e-VITARA—its debut electric vehicle—at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, in January.
Toshihiro Suzuki, Representative Director and President of Maruti Suzuki Motor Corporation, shared the company’s vision: “Across India, Japan, and Europe, our three-step strategy aims to enhance the appeal of EVs. First, by making BEVs attractive to consumers; second, by developing a dedicated BEV platform; and third, by offering the right product tailored to customer needs.”
Currently, electric vehicles constitute about 3% of total car sales in India.
The e-VITARA comes with a bold and contemporary design. Its front end features sleek LED headlamps with three-piece DRLs, a prominent blacked-out bumper, fog lights, and rugged silver skid plates for a robust look.
The vehicle is available with two lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack options—49kWh and 61kWh—and offers both front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations.
Key features include LED headlamps and tail lamps, LED DRLs, 18/19-inch wheels, a digital instrument cluster, touchscreen infotainment system, powered driver seat, wireless charging, a JBL premium sound system, a 360-degree camera, sunroof, and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
