World Fuel Services (World Fuel), a World Kinect company based in Miami, Florida, has partnered with DHL Express, the leading international express delivery provider, to facilitate the delivery of blended sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to Miami International Airport. This agreement represents one of the first regular shipments of blended SAF into Florida, according to a statement from Miami Airport. Over the next two years, World Fuel will deliver around 60 million gallons of blended SAF, which will include 18 million gallons of neat SAF, translating to approximately 227 million liters of blended SAF containing 68 million liters of neat SAF. The SAF will be supplied by Valero Marketing and Supply Company, a subsidiary of Valero Energy Corporation, reported Stat Times.
“We are excited to announce this agreement between DHL and World Fuel, which will provide the first consistent supply of sustainable aviation fuel to Miami International Airport and the state of Florida,” said Ralph Cutié, Director and CEO of Miami Airport. “This news is particularly gratifying as it follows MIA’s Airport Carbon Accreditation by Airports Council International in July, highlighting our commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing our climate goals.”
As per the media report, the neat SAF will be derived from used cooking oil and food waste, certified by the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC), and will have lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions that are, on average, at least 80 percent lower than those of conventional jet fuel. This fuel will enable DHL Express to offer its customers emission-reduced air transportation services through the DHL GoGreenPlus program. Using a book and claim approach, the SAF used by DHL can help their GoGreenPlus customers globally lower their CO2e emissions, with the reductions documented via certificates.
“We are proud to support DHL in ensuring a reliable supply of SAF to Florida,” stated Brad Hurwitz, Senior Vice President of Supply and Trading at World Fuel. “This initiative holds special significance for us at World Kinect, as our company has been rooted in Miami for its entire 40-year history. While our global presence has grown to include offices across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, bringing SAF to our hometown is particularly meaningful.”
The collaboration between DHL and World Fuel signifies another important step toward sustainable air freight and aligns with DHL Group’s sustainability objectives, underscoring the growing demand for low-carbon fuels like SAF. “Partnering with World Fuel is a great opportunity for us. Besides efficiency gains, SAF is the most crucial method currently available for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in air transport,” said Travis Cobb, EVP of Global Network Operations & Aviation at DHL Express. “GoGreenPlus provides a service solution for our customers with ambitious sustainability goals. Through our book & claim mechanism, we can allocate the environmental benefits of SAF used in our network to customers, even if their shipments are not transported using these fuels.”
