Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, a division of the technology group Wärtsilä, has been awarded contracts to supply and install bioLNG production systems for two major biogas projects in Finland. These facilities, commissioned by Suomen Lantakaasu Oy—a joint venture between biomethane producer St1 Biokraft and the dairy and food company Valio—are designed to each produce 25 tons of bioLNG daily. The orders were secured in the first quarter of the year.
The biogas plants will primarily utilize manure and food processing waste as feedstock. The byproduct of this process will be an odor-free biofertilizer, which will be returned to the farmers who supply the manure. Once operational, the plants will support the expansion of biogas-powered transportation, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of milk production through emissions cuts in both agriculture and transport sectors.
“Suomen Lantakaasu is committed to developing a robust biogas production network in Finland and promoting the use of biogas in transportation. Wärtsilä’s extensive expertise and proven success in delivering high-capacity biogas upgrading and liquefaction solutions are invaluable to our projects,” said Leena Helminen, CEO of Suomen Lantakaasu.
These greenfield projects will be constructed in Nurmo and Kiuruvesi, located in western and central Finland, respectively. Both facilities are scheduled to commence operations in the latter half of 2026.
“At Wärtsilä, our focus is on advancing decarbonization. Our bioLNG plants are a key element of this strategy, and these biogas upgrading and liquefaction facilities will play a significant role in supporting Suomen Lantakaasu’s sustainability goals,” said Magnus Folkelid, Sales Manager, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, Biogas.
In addition to the biogas upgrading and liquefaction units, Wärtsilä will also supply 300m³ storage tanks and an export station. Previously, Wärtsilä has provided biogas upgrading and liquefaction systems to St1 Biokraft in Sweden and Norway.
