US wood pellet exports rise 3% year-on-year to 879,591 metric tons in May

The United States exported 879,590.7 metric tons of wood pellets in May, up 3% from the same month last year, although shipments declined 6% from April, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA FAS).

The U.S. supplied wood pellets to around 16 countries during the month, with the United Kingdom remaining the largest export market, importing 591,820.9 metric tonsJapan was the second-largest destination with 66,181 metric tons, followed by the French West Indies with 62,573.1 metric tons, Biomass Magazine reported.

The value of U.S. wood pellet exports stood at $162.76 million in May, down from $182.77 million in April but higher than the $158.85 million recorded in May 2025.

During the first five months of 2026, total U.S. wood pellet exports reached 4.49 million metric tons, valued at $856.4 million. This compares with 4.11 million metric tons worth $787.89 million exported during the corresponding period of 2025, reflecting growth in both export volume and value.
