Scotland: RWE seeks permission to boost Fife biomass facility

RWE has requested permission to construct a support system adjacent to its 55MW biomass plant on the outskirts of Markinch in Fife, Scotland, reported Bioenergy Insight.

The proposed gas-fired system aims to enhance the plant’s resilience in the event of a power disruption and would contribute electricity to the National Grid.

If the proposal is approved, the system will comprise two gas engines housed in a single powerhouse, along with a new gas connection.

Operating as a standby system, the Glenrothes facility would be active for short periods, responding to market demands. However, it must have the capability to operate for up to 1,500 hours annually.

According to planning documents submitted to Fife Council, the construction period is estimated to be between one year and 18 months.

The final decision regarding the planning application lies with Fife Council.
