Punjab Agricultural University partners with firms to commercialize affordable biogas technology

Ludhiana: The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has signed agreements with two companies, one based in Barnala and the other in Kolhapur, to commercialize its biogas plant technologies. This move aims to make sustainable energy solutions more widely available, reported The Tribune.

Dr. Ajmer Singh Dhatt, PAU’s Director of Research, and representatives from the respective companies formalized the partnerships by signing Memorandums of Agreement (MoAs).

“PAU has entered into an agreement with Chhapa Energy Power Company from Chappa village in Barnala for the commercialization of our ‘PAU Fixed Dome Type Janta Model’ biogas plant,” Dr. Dhatt explained. “We also signed a separate agreement with Shree Govardhan Enterprises.”

Dr. Sooch provided details about the PAU dome, a family-sized biogas plant, highlighting its simplicity and cost-effectiveness. “This plant’s construction is straightforward, utilizing brick masonry,” he said. “Its design is adaptable to all regions of India, and a single digester can be customized for capacities ranging from 1 to 25 cubic meters per day.”

A significant advantage of the PAU design is its affordability. “The cost of this plant is approximately 60-70 percent lower than traditional floating drum biogas plants,” Dr. Sooch noted. “Moreover, its maintenance requirements are considerably less.” He also emphasized the quality of the digested material produced, stating it’s a valuable manure ready for field application.

Dr. Khushdeep Dharni, Associate Director of PAU’s Technology Marketing and IPR Cell, underscored the university’s commitment to expanding access to biogas technology. “With these agreements, PAU has now signed 57 MoAs for the commercialization of biogas plant-based technologies,” he said. “This demonstrates our dedication to providing energy-efficient solutions to a broader audience.”
