NTPC plans to increase power generation capacity to 149 GW by 2032

New Delhi: State-owned NTPC Limited plans to increase its power generation capacity from the existing 91 gigawatts (GW) to 149 GW by 2032, adding around 58 GW, Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh said, according to ANI.

The expansion will include projects using different energy sources, including renewable energy, to meet India’s growing electricity demand.

Speaking at the KPMG ENRich 2026 event in New Delhi, Singh said the company was also stepping up its plans to generate electricity from nuclear power. NTPC aims to develop around 30 GW of nuclear power capacity as part of its broader target of 250 GW by 2037.

The company has completed studies to assess the feasibility of setting up nuclear power projects in Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha. It is also looking at other states for possible future projects.

Singh said India had managed global economic and political uncertainties without witnessing the sharp increase in energy prices seen in several other parts of the world.

He also pointed to the rising demand for electricity, which increased by 21 per cent in October and has continued to grow month after month.

NTPC’s expansion plans are expected to strengthen the country’s electricity generation capacity and increase the share of renewable and other non-fossil fuel sources in its energy mix, ANI reported.
