Nordion Energi announced on Tuesday, December 10, that it is investing in a new biogas liquefaction plant at the Port of Gothenburg to supply 250 GWh of liquefied biogas (LBG) annually. The move aims to meet the growing demand for renewable energy in Sweden’s shipping, heavy transport, and industrial sectors, reported Manifold Times.
Set to be completed by autumn 2026, the facility will be Sweden’s first biogas liquefaction plant with direct connection to the Western Swedish gas network. The 250 GWh annual output is equivalent to more than 100 ship bunkerings or the fuel consumption of 500 trucks per year.
Hans Kreisel, CEO of Nordion Energi, stated that the investment is a critical step in achieving the company’s goal of a fully green gas network. “The liquefaction facility will enable more biogas producers to connect to the network, significantly improving the security of supply for all customers seeking biogas,” he said.
The biogas liquefaction plant comes as Sweden’s liquefied biogas market is expected to grow to over 10 TWh by 2030. St1 Biokraft, one of the leading renewable energy companies, has already secured part of the plant’s production capacity.
Miika Johansson, CEO of St1 Biokraft, emphasized the strategic importance of the facility, saying, “This plant will expand our LBG supply for customers in shipping, heavy transport, and industry. Its location at the Port of Gothenburg is crucial for our supply chain, enabling us to efficiently serve filling stations, industries, and bunkering vessels in the region.”
The new biogas plant will also solidify the Port of Gothenburg’s role as a key hub for renewable fuel bunkering. Jill Söderwall, Business Area Manager at the Port of Gothenburg, commented, “With this facility, we ensure reliable, round-the-clock availability of liquefied biogas for shipping operations, contributing to a more sustainable maritime industry.”
This investment aligns with Sweden’s broader transition to renewable energy, supporting the country’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote cleaner energy solutions across various sectors.
