Neste will supply up to 1 million gallons (3,000 metric tons) of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ to United Airlines for use at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) in the U.S. through the end of 2024. This extension of the existing partnership allows United to be the first airline to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for flights from Chicago O’Hare, one of the busiest airports in the U.S.
The initial delivery of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel, blended with conventional jet fuel, is set to arrive at Chicago O’Hare Airport via pipeline in August. This delivery will come from Neste’s newly commissioned SAF terminal in Houston, which increases the availability of Neste’s SAF for airlines operating at airports from the Rocky Mountains to the East Coast.
“We are thrilled to broaden our partnership with United and see our SAF utilized at a major U.S. airport. This highlights our commitment to aiding the U.S. aviation industry in its decarbonization efforts and underscores the vital role of supportive policies like the federal SAF 40B credit and Illinois’ SAF Purchase Credit in promoting SAF usage. We are dedicated to supporting United’s emissions reduction goals and anticipate further collaboration at other airports globally,” said Alexander Kueper, Vice President of Renewable Aviation Business at Neste.
United President Brett Hart, who was at ORD today with Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, remarked, “This is a prime example of how innovation, leadership, and policy can come together. Although the SAF market is still developing, there is significant potential for airlines and policymakers to collaborate in fostering its growth. SAF at O’Hare became a reality thanks to Governor Pritzker and the Illinois Legislature’s tax incentives.”
