Kochi: Structural plan of Brahmapuram CBG plant to be ready soon

The groundwork for the proposed Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant by BPCL Kochi Refineries at Kochi Corporation’s solid waste treatment yard in Brahmapur is set to commence in the last week of May, reported The Hindu.

The structural design for the planned plant is anticipated to be completed by next week. This design will undergo review by BPCL’s engaged consultant and petroleum experts before being submitted for statutory approval. The firm initiated work on the design following the results of soil testing.

The engineers from the contracted firm aim to initiate the foundation work on-site before the monsoon season, prioritizing areas where deep piling is unnecessary. The project’s progress will be contingent on weather conditions, according to an official.

The civic administration perceives the ₹80-crore project as a significant stride towards the scientific management of biodegradable waste in the city. Neighboring municipalities, grappling with waste management issues, are optimistic about the plant’s potential. Annually, they allocate a considerable budget for waste management. Pending a smooth execution, the unit is expected to become operational within a year.

The Punjab-based firm, Centre for Entrepreneurship and Industries Development, secured the bid for establishing the plant. BPCL intends to utilize the biogas produced for its energy requirements, while the biomanure will be beneficial for agriculture. The Corporation will be responsible for supplying food waste to the plant for processing.
