Italy: Axpo Holding to build biomethane plant

Swiss renewable energy producer and trader Axpo Holding AG is proceeding with the construction of a biomethane plant in Italy, which is expected to produce around 45 GWh of renewable energy each year.

Situated in the municipality of Grottole in southern Italy, this facility marks Axpo’s entry into the Italian biomethane market and is projected to be operational by the end of 2025. The plant will convert agricultural waste from local farms into carbon-neutral green gas, which will be fed into Italy’s national gas network.

A consortium of Italian firms, led by Atzwanger SpA and BiHcon, has been selected as the engineering, procurement, and construction contractors for the project, with construction slated to begin later this month.

Earlier this month, Axpo completed a deal with a local developer for the project, but the parties have opted not to disclose the sale price.

Axpo operates 15 biogas plants in Switzerland and has a biomethane plant in Spain that produces 26 GWh of energy annually, with plans to expand its capacity to 115 GWh in the future.

Additionally, in April, Axpo announced plans to establish a biomethane production facility in Portugal, further expanding its market presence.
