Indian Railways to begin hydrogen-powered train trials in December 2024

Indian Railways is set to begin trials for its first hydrogen-powered train in December 2024, marking a major step toward adopting eco-friendly and sustainable transport solutions. The trials will be conducted on the 90-kilometer Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana as part of the railways’ plan to move towards green energy and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030, reports India Today.

The train uses hydrogen fuel cells that create electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, releasing only water vapour as a by-product. This makes it a clean and environmentally friendly transportation option. The initiative aligns with India’s efforts to fight climate change and reduce dependency on fossil fuels.

The Jind-Sonipat line was selected for its manageable traffic and proximity to necessary facilities. During the trials, the train’s safety, efficiency, and performance will be closely analyzed to ensure its suitability for broader use.

Indian Railways plans to roll out 35 hydrogen-powered trains by 2025. These trains will mainly serve non-electrified routes where diesel engines are currently in use. The railways are also exploring partnerships with local and global companies to build the necessary infrastructure for hydrogen production and storage.

India joins countries like Germany and China, which have already started using hydrogen-powered trains. Germany has successfully launched commercial services with such trains, showcasing their practicality. India’s initiative reflects its willingness to adopt proven global technologies while addressing its specific needs.

This trial is an important step in Indian Railways’ efforts to switch to clean energy. As one of the largest rail networks in the world, its move toward hydrogen-powered trains could encourage similar initiatives globally.

By introducing hydrogen-powered trains, Indian Railways is addressing environmental concerns while fostering innovation and economic growth in green energy. This move underscores the railways’ commitment to creating a transportation system that balances progress with sustainability.

The hydrogen-powered train trials mark the beginning of a cleaner and more sustainable future for Indian Railways. By embracing this green technology, India is taking a significant step toward reducing its environmental impact and leading the way in combating climate change.
