Hylron begins green hydrogen production in Namibia

The global push for green hydrogen is gaining momentum, with several significant projects reaching new milestones. Companies are deploying advanced technologies to produce and utilize this clean energy source across various sectors.

HyIron has announced the production of its first green hydrogen molecules at its facility in Namibia, which commenced construction in April 2024, reports PV Magazine.

The 12 MW electrolyzer, reportedly the largest in Southern Africa, is operating within a smart microgrid and gradually increasing its output. This will facilitate zero-emissions iron production. HyIron is also engaging with Chinese companies Jinko, Peric, and Sungrow regarding the project’s second and third phases, and exploring additional projects to decarbonize shipping, long-haul trucking, and rail transport, potentially starting by 2025. James Mnyupe, Namibia’s presidential economic adviser, clarified that while direct hydrogen exports to Germany are not planned, discussions are underway to export direct reduced iron to Germany and Japan. He emphasized that Namibia’s Green Hydrogen Program aims to unlock new trade opportunities for the nation’s economy.

In Australia, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has secured AUD 814 million ($512 million) through the Hydrogen Headstart program for its Murchison Green Hydrogen project in Western Australia. This project will be powered by 6 GW of onshore wind and solar, to produce 1.8 million tons of green ammonia annually, primarily for export to Asian markets, according to Murchison Renewables.

In the Middle East, Enoc Group has entered a trial agreement with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to explore green hydrogen-powered mobility solutions in Dubai. Enoc will supply green hydrogen fuel to RTA’s hydrogen-powered city buses and provide technical support for a feasibility study on hydrogen refuelling, ensuring adherence to high safety and operational standards.

Res Integra has initiated the installation of a 700-ton-per-year electrolyzer system at its facility in Siracusa, Italy, utilizing Ohmium’s PEM electrolyzer technology. Ohmium reports that the project, scheduled for shipping in 2025, will be powered by solar energy to produce green hydrogen for regional industrial decarbonization and mobility.

In Scotland, Nel Hydrogen has secured a purchase order from Hydrasun for a 2.5 MW containerized PEM unit for the Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub.

The company stated that this scalable green hydrogen production, storage, and distribution facility is being developed through a joint venture between BP and the Aberdeen City Council.
