Honeywell announces Jiutai selected its UOP eFining technology to support production of 100,000 tonnes of SAF

Honeywell has announced that Inner Mongolia Jiutai Group (Jiutai) has chosen its UOP eFining technology to support the annual production of 100,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from eMethanol. This agreement marks Honeywell’s first global commercial eFining license and aligns with the company’s focus on major trends: the future of aviation, energy transition, and automation.

Honeywell eFining is a methanol-to-jet (MTJ) technology that converts eMethanol into eSAF, a low-carbon jet fuel. This technology is known for its reliability, scalability, and cost-effectiveness compared to other methods. By utilizing methanol made from carbon dioxide (CO2) and green hydrogen, Honeywell’s eFining technology not only broadens the types of feedstock used for SAF but also reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 88% compared to traditional jet fuel.

“Honeywell’s deep expertise in SAF technology has allowed us to develop innovative methods for using flexible feedstocks to advance aviation’s energy transition,” said William Yu, President of Honeywell China. “This collaboration not only represents our first commercial license for SAF production with Honeywell’s eFining technology but also underscores our commitment to the sustainable development of the global aviation sector and our efforts towards a low-carbon future.”

Inner Mongolia Jiutai Group plans to use eFining technology to transform its methanol-to-olefins (MTO) facility into a SAF production plant. By harnessing the abundant wind resources in northwest China, Honeywell and Jiutai aim to achieve highly efficient SAF production.

“With over a century of technological advancements, Honeywell has built a strong partnership with Jiutai,” said Cui Lianguo, Chairman of Jiutai Group. “This collaboration will enable Jiutai to integrate surplus capacity from our MTO facility and utilize Honeywell’s technology to produce SAF. This partnership supports our group’s energy transformation and contributes to a sustainable future for the aviation industry.”

Honeywell’s eFining technology is part of its broader portfolio aimed at decarbonizing the aviation sector. In collaboration with Eni S.p.A., Honeywell pioneered SAF production with its Ecofining process, commercially producing SAF since 2016. Honeywell now provides solutions for a variety of feedstocks to meet the growing demand for renewable fuels, including SAF, which is essential for reducing aviation emissions. More than 50 sites worldwide have licensed Honeywell’s SAF technologies, with refineries expected to achieve a combined capacity of over 500,000 barrels of SAF per day when fully operational.
