Hima Cement uses over 50% of fuel for cement production from biomass

Hima Cement has announced that over half of its fuel used in cement production now comes from renewable biomass sources, marking a significant step forward in Uganda’s decarbonisation agenda, according to The Independent Uganda, reports Bioenergy Insight.

Speaking at the Uganda Chamber of Energy and Minerals (UCEM) Convention in Kampala, David Mugagga, Head of Regulatory Affairs at Hima Cement, said the milestone reflects the company’s integrated sustainability approach, which combines circular energy systems and local community engagement at the core of operations.

“Our kilns are now fired using coffee husks, palm kernels, rice husks, sawdust — all sourced locally by our biomass and co-processing department,” Mugagga stated. He highlighted a unique initiative from 2016, where Hima Cement distributed over 10 million coffee seedlings to farmers, creating income opportunities while also establishing a long-term source of biomass.

The company’s dedicated department is responsible for sourcing and managing alternative fuels to reduce reliance on heavy fuel oil (HFO). In addition to agricultural biomass, Hima Cement processes non-hazardous industrial waste in partnership with companies committed to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals.

“We are licensed to use industrial waste as fuel. This is not just about energy efficiency — it’s about aligning with other organisations that are serious about reducing their carbon footprint,” Mugagga said.

Hima Cement has been a key supplier for major national infrastructure projects, including Mandela National Stadium, Entebbe Expressway, and Karuma Dam. Its renewable energy efforts underline its role as a leading advocate for green industrial practices in Uganda.
