Haryana: Karnal sugar mill to set up CBG plant under PPP model

The Haryana State Federation of Cooperative Sugar Mills Limited has announced plans to set up compressed biogas (CBG) plants across the state as part of a move toward cleaner energy. A major project has been proposed at the Karnal Cooperative Sugar Mill, where a CBG plant will be developed through a public-private partnership, The Tribune reported.

Aditi, Managing Director of the Karnal Cooperative Sugar Mill, said the proposed plant would use press mud produced at the mill to generate clean energy. She said the project would help convert waste into renewable energy and promote better use of resources.

She said the tender process for the project is currently underway at the federation’s headquarters and added that the mill is hopeful of being selected for the installation of the CBG plant.

During the ongoing 2025–26 crushing season, the mill has crushed 18.29 lakh quintals of sugarcane, Aditi said.

She also said the mill’s 18 MW power plant has so far generated 2.185 crore units of electricity. Of this, 1.41 crore units were supplied to Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam, earning the mill an additional net income of Rs 8.97 crore.

The mill has paid Rs 63 crore to farmers for sugarcane supplied up to January 15, covering 83.40 per cent of the total amount due so far. This is the highest payment percentage among sugar mills in Haryana, she added.

Aditi also highlighted steps taken for farmer welfare. Under the Atal Kisan Canteen scheme, farmers supplying sugarcane to the mill are provided meals at a subsidised cost of Rs 10. The mill has also set up a modern rest house with boarding and lodging facilities for farmers during their stay.
