In a move aimed at fostering self-sustainability, the Greater Noida Authority announced plans to establish Bio-CNG plants at two local cow shelters, Jalpura and Pauvari. The initiative, which was disclosed on Tuesday, will convert cow dung into Bio-CNG fuel, with the generated gas to be sold. The proceeds from these sales will be directed toward the upkeep and maintenance of the shelters, reported Hindustan Times.
NG Ravi, CEO of the Greater Noida Authority, emphasized that the goal is to turn these cow shelters into self-funded entities by installing dung-based Bio-CNG plants. “The installation of these plants will not only provide a renewable energy source but will also ensure the shelters’ financial independence, enabling better care for the cattle and contributing to environmental sustainability,” Ravi said in a recent meeting.
A Bio-CNG plant works by converting cow dung into compressed natural gas through anaerobic digestion, a process that produces eco-friendly fuel. This fuel can be used for cooking, heating, and even powering vehicles, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Additionally, the project will help manage waste, generate revenue, and promote local economic growth by creating jobs and supporting the green economy.
Abhishek Pathak, Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at the Greater Noida Authority, confirmed that the tender for the Bio-CNG plant at the Jalpura shelter has already been awarded, with construction expected to start soon. “The tendering process for the Pauvari shelter is still ongoing, with applications under review,” he added.
This initiative aligns with Greater Noida’s broader vision of promoting environmental sustainability and self-reliance, all while contributing to the local economy. The authority expects construction to begin shortly, bringing the project closer to fruition.
