First WATT to install solar and battery systems across MTN Nigeria facilities

First WATT Renewable Ltd, a subsidiary of hybrid solar energy solutions provider WATT Renewable Corp, has entered into a strategic renewable energy partnership with MTN Nigeria to deploy solar power and energy storage infrastructure across key operational sites in the country.

The agreement includes an Energy-as-a-Service model under which First WATT Renewable will install 34 MWp of solar generation capacity along with 40 MWh of battery energy storage systems at selected MTN facilities, Renewables Now reported.

The planned installations will cover critical infrastructure including data centres, switching facilities, cable landing stations and customer service centres across Nigeria.

As part of the partnership’s second phase, First WATT Renewable will also provide renewable energy infrastructure to support 60-kW electric vehicle charging stations at eight MTN locations.

The initiative is aimed at reducing dependence on diesel-powered energy systems while lowering emissions and improving operational reliability.

According to the companies, the project is also expected to support uninterrupted operations and strengthen business continuity across MTN’s network infrastructure.

Commenting on the partnership, Tobechukwu Okigbo, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer at MTN Nigeria, said renewable energy will play an increasingly important role as Nigeria’s energy and transport landscape evolves.

He said the partnership supports the company’s efforts to reduce diesel consumption, improve efficiency and build more resilient systems to support connectivity services.

Okigbo added that the initiative aligns with MTN Nigeria’s broader sustainability objectives and long-term energy transition plans.

The agreement reflects growing interest among large businesses in adopting renewable energy solutions to improve energy security and reduce operating costs while advancing environmental goals.
