Delhi targets dairy waste with major biogas expansion plan

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has drawn up an action plan to stop dairy waste from flowing into the Yamuna through the city’s drains, Hindustan Times reported.

Senior civic officials said the plan includes setting up 10 biogas plants and nine wastewater treatment facilities. It also proposes revamping drainage systems in dairy colonies and constructing sedimentation chambers to prevent untreated waste from entering the river.

The civic body and the Government of Delhi have been directed to work jointly with the National Dairy Development Board to manage waste generated by dairies and cow shelters.

In September last year, the MCD operationalised its first biogas plant at Nangli dairy in southwest Delhi. The facility can process 200 tonnes of dairy waste per day. Two more plants are currently under construction at Goyla dairy and Ghogha dairy.

Under the new action plan, biogas plants have been proposed at multiple dairy clusters across the city. These include 200-tonne-per-day (TPD) facilities at Ghazipur dairy and Bhalswa dairy, each spread over 10 acres. Plants with a capacity of 75 TPD are planned at Masoodpur dairy and Madanpur Khadar, while a 100 TPD unit is proposed at Sarita Vihar.

Additional facilities include a 200 TPD plant at Mangolpuri near the Outer Ring Road, a 100 TPD plant at Pitampura, 200 TPD plants each at Sector 3 Rohini and Sagarpur, and a smaller 50 TPD plant at Sri Ram Colony near Khajuri Khas.

Officials said the measures aim to reduce pollution in the Yamuna by ensuring that dairy waste is treated and processed before disposal.
