Delhi plans more biogas plants to manage dairy and city waste

New Delhi: The Delhi government is taking steps to set up compressed biogas plants using dairy and organic municipal waste and generate green fuel and fertilisers, said officials, reports milleniumpost.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had inaugurated two biogas plants with daily capacities of 200 tonnes and 100 tonnes at Nangli Dairy and Ghogha Dairy in September 2025. These projects were launched to stop untreated waste from entering the Yamuna River through uncovered drains.

Officials said the Municipal Corporation of Delhi generates about 11,500 tonnes of waste every day. At present, the city has the capacity to process only 7,642 tonnes daily, leaving more than 4,600 tonnes per day untreated.

To address this shortfall, the government plans to increase waste processing capacity by 650 tonnes per day by the end of this year through two new facilities. Work is currently underway on a 300-tonne-per-day bio-CNG plant in Okhla and a 350-tonne-per-day plant in Ghazipur. Both are expected to become operational by December.

In addition, two more plants with a capacity of 200 tonnes per day each are planned. Officials said the plant at Goyala Dairy is likely to start operations by March this year, while another unit at Ghogha Dairy is expected to be commissioned in August.
