CIP to build Finland’s largest industrial biogas plant

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has taken the final investment decision on Finland’s biggest industrial-scale biogas project, Nivalan Biokaasu, which will produce liquefied renewable natural gas (bioLNG), reports Bioenergy Insight.

The facility, developed with local partner Wega, is designed to generate more than 200 GWh of biomethane annually, cutting an estimated 38,000 tonnes of fossil CO₂ emissions. Once operational, it will process over 600,000 tonnes of agricultural and industrial organic waste every year.

Construction of the plant in Nivala is expected to begin in late 2025, with commissioning planned for the second half of 2027. The Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment awarded the project a major capital expenditure grant in 2024, underlining its strategic role in the country’s energy transition.

The investment is being made through CIP’s CI Advanced Bioenergy Fund I (CI ABF I). This will be the fund’s third project and its first outside Denmark.

Thomas Dalsgaard, Partner at CIP, said the venture marks a significant step into Finland’s bioenergy market. “This project will strengthen energy security, support the green transition, create jobs, and bring new investment to agriculture and rural communities,” he said.

The financial details of the investment have not been disclosed.
