ChiniMandi hosts roundtable session in Goa: Sugar traders meet to brainstorm proposed Sugar (Control) Order 2024

Sugar traders from across India convened at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Goa on September 15 for a roundtable session organised by ChiniMandi. The focus of the meeting was a comprehensive discussion and brainstorming on the proposed Sugar (Control) Order 2024.

The event, which saw the participation of Indian traders and ChiniMandi’s legal team, provided a forum for in-depth discussions on various aspects of the new order. Attendees raised concerns and offered suggestions about its potential impact. A thorough analysis of the proposed order was presented during the session.

The session committee comprised Rahil Shaikh from MEIR Commodities, Mohan Narang from KS Commodities, Janeesh Patel from Samparpan Sugar, Uppal Shah and Hemant Shah from ChiniMandi, Jitu Shah from JK Group, Husain Gangardiwala from Najmuddin Trading, and Adv. Rahoul Desae from the legal team.

Special focus during the session was given to trade of sugar and its by-products.

ChiniMandi had previously organized a roundtable for millers in Kolhapur on September 6, 2024, and a separate session for traders was held the day before. ChiniMandi will compile and submit the concerns and suggestions of both millers and traders regarding the proposed Sugar (Control) Order to the government before the September 23 deadline.

This initiative by ChiniMandi has been well received by both the miller and trader communities.

The government, in an effort to update the regulatory framework of the sugar industry, released the draft Sugar (Control) Order 2024. An office memorandum dated August 22 highlighted that technological advancements in sugar production have necessitated revisions to the existing Sugar (Control) Order, 1966. Accordingly, the draft Sugar (Control) Order 2024 was issued.

Sugar (Control) Order looks after various aspects of the sugar industry, including regulation of production, sale, packaging and international trade of sugar, release quota for sale, movement and export/import of sugar.
