Cepsa starts supply of second-generation biofuels for cruise industry at Port of Barcelona

Cepsa, a leading energy provider for maritime transport in Spain, has begun its first direct delivery of second-generation biofuels for the cruise industry at the Port of Barcelona. Additional supplies are planned for the coming months, with biofuels available regularly from both the Ports of Barcelona and Algeciras, reported Biomass Magazine.

As per media report, the delivered fuel features a 24% sustainable component, which will help reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 3,000 tons—equivalent to the effect of planting 200,000 trees. This biofuel is derived from used cooking oils, supporting the circular economy.

The Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) operated vessel Norwegian Escape, measuring 1,069 feet in length, received the initial biofuel shipment in late July and will continue to receive biofuel throughout the EU season. Cepsa also provided biofuel to two other NCLH ships, the 734-foot Seven Seas Voyager and the 785-foot Oceania Riviera, in early August.

This initiative further establishes Cepsa as a leader in the energy transition and a key player in maritime energy supply. Cepsa is well-positioned to provide these sustainable fuels to the cruise industry regularly at the Spanish ports where it operates.

Samir Fernández, Director of Marine Fuel Solutions at Cepsa, stated: “We are excited to see second-generation biofuels being utilized by the cruise industry as it progresses towards decarbonization. Marine biofuels can be used in ships without engine modifications and offer a significant reduction in CO2 emissions—up to 90% throughout their lifecycle—making them an ideal immediate solution.”
