The construction of the compressed biogas (CBG) plant at the Brahmapuram waste disposal site has been successfully completed, marking a significant step forward in the city’s waste management efforts, reported The New Indian Express.
With the capacity to process 75 tonnes of biodegradable waste daily, the plant will handle waste from Kochi Corporation and surrounding local bodies. The plant is expected to begin converting biodegradable waste into compressed gas by the end of April, after the trial run, which began recently.
In the future, the plant’s processing capacity is planned to be expanded to 150 tonnes per day. Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) is overseeing the construction of the facility, which has been built at an investment of Rs 90 crore on land that was reclaimed after biomining. The compressed biogas produced will be transported to BPCL’s refinery through a dedicated pipeline.
Mayor M Anilkumar shared that the second biodigester is expected to be completed soon, adding, “Though the construction timeline was initially set at 18 months, we managed to finish the project six months ahead of schedule. The Kochi Corporation provided full support and assistance, granting all necessary permissions and helping resolve any obstacles promptly whenever they arose. BPCL management and the Kochi Corporation worked closely together to ensure the timely completion of this project.”
The state government had approved BPCL Kochi Refinery’s proposal to set up the MSW-based CBG plant at Brahmapuram in November 2023. This initiative aims to address the longstanding waste management issues and the recurring fire hazards at the Brahmapuram site.
In addition, work is underway on a biomedical waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram, which will have the capacity to process three tonnes of biomedical waste per day. This facility will allow for the incineration of sanitary waste, including soiled sanitary napkins and adult diapers. Chief Secretary Sarada Muraleedharan recently visited the site to review the progress of the ongoing projects.
