Biogas-based methanol powers new tractor unveiled in China

A tractor powered by methanol produced from biogas made from agricultural waste has been introduced at an international farm machinery exhibition in Wuhan, China, Agronews.UA reported.

The machine was presented by Chinese company Zhongke Yuandongli at the China International Agricultural Machinery Exhibition (CIAME) under its new brand Chivotor.

According to the developers, the tractor runs on methyl alcohol, or methanol, which can be produced from biogas generated from agricultural waste. The company said this type of fuel is cheaper and more environmentally friendly compared to conventional fuels.

The tractor has an engine power of 340 horsepower and is equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The manufacturer said methanol offers efficiency similar to diesel fuel while producing very low emissions of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter.

Designed for heavy agricultural operations, the tractor features a reinforced chassis to handle large loads. The cabin is designed for operator comfort and includes electronic controls and a seat with pneumatic suspension.

Since Zhongke Yuandongli also works in robotics technology, the tractor can be fitted with an additional module that allows it to operate autonomously without a driver.
