In a major push for sustainable waste management, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced plans to establish a green energy biogas plant at Unit-I haat, the city’s largest retail and wholesale market, reports The Economic Times.
The proposed plant will process three tonnes of organic waste daily and will be built on a 3,500-square-foot site provided by the civic body. An external agency will be selected through a competitive bidding process to build, operate, and maintain the plant for five years.
The plant will not only help manage the large volume of green waste generated by the market but also produce electricity, which will be sold to the power grid to make the project economically sustainable. The BMC has already invited bids and outlined detailed specifications for the facility.
“The Unit-I haat generates a significant amount of green waste, which we currently handle at our micro composting centres,” said Mayor Sulochana Das. “This project will allow us to process the waste right at the source using clean energy technology.”
Das added that the selected agency must have relevant experience and will be expected to complete the project within six months of finalization.
According to BMC’s project guidelines, the plant must use anaerobic digestion technology to process organic waste in a scientific and environmentally sustainable way, while meeting pollution control norms. The facility will also support green energy efforts by converting organic waste into biogas, which can be used for electricity generation or thermal applications, reducing the city’s reliance on fossil fuels.
