Berge Bulk and BHP have achieved a milestone in eco-friendly shipping by completing the first iron ore shipment from Australia to China powered entirely by biodiesel.
The Berge Lyngor, a large bulk carrier with a capacity of 206,330 DWT, successfully used B100 biodiesel for its voyage. This marks the first time biodiesel has been used to transport iron ore along the trade route between Australia and China.
Gerard Ang, head of maritime iron ore at BHP, emphasized the importance of the partnership in reducing emissions. “This collaboration with Berge Bulk is an important step in cutting greenhouse gas emissions from transporting our products. It shows how bold actions and teamwork can make meaningful progress toward sustainability,” he said.
Duncan Bond, chief commercial officer of Berge Bulk, explained the company’s long-term goals. “We aim to operate a vessel with zero direct emissions by 2030 and to achieve the same for our entire fleet by 2050. This voyage with B100 biodiesel not only reduces emissions for this trip but also demonstrates how working together can make shipping greener,” Bond said.
