Gujarat leads nation in solar power, contributes 34% under PM Surya Ghar Scheme

Gujarat has once again set a national benchmark in renewable energy implementation, with the successful and ahead-of-schedule achievement of its solar rooftop installation target under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana for the financial year 2024–25. The Chief Minister’s Office, in a press release, attributed this success to strong policy execution, efficient administration, and active public participation under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the guidance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.

According to data from Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL), as of May 11, 2025, the state has installed 3.36 lakh solar rooftop systems, the highest in the country. Gujarat had originally set a target of 3.05 lakh installations, which it exceeded well before the end of the fiscal year.

The state now accounts for 34 percent of all rooftop solar installations under this scheme nationwide. So far, ₹2,362 crore in central government subsidies have been disbursed to 3.03 lakh households in Gujarat through the initiative.

Among the top-performing states, Gujarat leads by a significant margin. It is followed by Maharashtra with 1.89 lakh installations, Uttar Pradesh with 1.22 lakh, Kerala with 95,000, and Rajasthan with 43,000 installations.

The installations in Gujarat are generating over 1,232 megawatts of power, which translates to around 1,834 million units of conventional electricity. If the same amount of energy had been produced through coal-based power plants, it would have required an estimated 1,284 metric tonnes of coal and resulted in approximately 1,504 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions—a significant environmental saving.

Launched in February 2024 by Prime Minister Modi, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana offers households up to 300 units of free electricity per month, along with a subsidy of up to ₹78,000 for solar systems with a capacity of up to 3 kilowatts. Any homeowner with a suitable rooftop is eligible, and the application process is fully online via https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in.

Officials attribute Gujarat’s standout performance not just to government planning, but also to widespread citizen engagement and support from local bodies. A series of state-wide awareness campaigns were carried out in both rural and urban areas, helping residents understand the scheme’s benefits and simplifying the application process.

With this coordinated push, Gujarat has emerged as a national leader in the renewable energy space—setting an example for how policy, governance, and community involvement can together drive impactful change.
