The Bolivian government, through the state-owned Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB), is making significant strides in hydrocarbon industrialization with the construction of the Biodiesel Plant II “Héroes de Senkata,” a project costing over $66 million. This key infrastructure is aimed at bolstering the nation’s energy security, reports bnamericas.
Situated in the Senkata region of El Alto, the plant will boast a production capacity of 1,500 barrels of biodiesel daily. This will significantly reduce Bolivia’s reliance on imported diesel and encourage the adoption of biofuels.
The biodiesel production will utilize 98% vegetable oils and 2% used cooking oil, promoting a circular economy and minimizing environmental impact.
This initiative reinforces Bolivia’s dedication to the energy transition and the diversification of its fuel sources towards more sustainable options.
The Biodiesel Plant II is currently in its final construction phase. This project aligns with the government’s energy transition policy and its goal to decrease fuel import dependence.
A recent government decree, effective March 13, 2024, mandates the gradual replacement of imported diesel additives and inputs by setting mixing percentages of biodiesel and ethanol with traditional fossil fuels for commercial distribution.
Last March, YPFB inaugurated Biodiesel Plant I at the Palmasola facility in Santa Cruz. Following successful testing and verification, this plant is now fully operational, producing biodiesel. The Bolivian government is actively promoting the use of renewable energy sources.
