Nordic Investment Bank grants loan for Denmark’s major biogas facility

The Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) has announced a loan of DKK 250 million (USD 34.7 million/EUR 33.5 million) to Tonder Biogas A/S.  The funds will be used to build and run a large biogas facility in Denmark, which will produce methane equivalent to 455 GWh of energy each year.

The 16-year loan will support the Tonder Biogas facility, which is expected to begin operating commercially in the first half of 2025.  The plant will be able to produce 41 million cubic meters of biomethane annually, which will be added to the natural gas network.

Construction on the project began in 2021.  Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) now owns the project, having purchased it from Anaergia in 2023. Lundsby Renewable Solutions is the construction contractor.

The plant, described as one of the largest in Europe, will process approximately 930,000 tonnes of biomass each year, using manure and industrial waste as raw materials.  It will also produce over 800,000 tonnes of digestate, which can be used as fertilizer.

Switching from natural gas to biomethane will reduce CO2 emissions by more than 90,000 tonnes per year.  Furthermore, over 48,000 tonnes of liquid CO2 will be captured and sold to companies working on Power-to-X technologies (converting electricity to other forms of energy).
