Japan-based renewable energy company Renova Inc. announced on February 5 that the Omaezakikou Biomass Power Plant has officially commenced operations. The 75-megawatt (MW) facility, which runs on wood pellets and palm kernel shells (PKS), began generating power on January 29, reports Biomass Magazine.
The plant, located at the Port of Omaezaki in Shizuoka Prefecture, was initially scheduled to start operations in December 2023 but faced multiple delays. In December 2024, Renova stated that the launch would be postponed further to allow for additional adjustments to the boiler and turbine systems. The modifications were necessary to ensure long-term stable operations, pushing the anticipated start date to March 2025. However, the company has now confirmed that the facility is fully operational ahead of schedule.
With the launch of the Omaezakikou Biomass Power Plant, Renova expects to boost economic activity in the region, particularly in the cities of Omaezaki and Makinohara. The increased movement of fuel carriers at the port is expected to enhance port and harbour operations while also generating new employment opportunities. Additionally, the facility is set to contribute to Japan’s renewable energy goals by increasing the share of biomass power in the country’s energy mix.
The Omaezakikou plant is the latest addition to Renova’s growing portfolio of biomass power projects. In November 2023, the company brought its 75-MW Morinomiyako Biomass Power Plant online, followed by the launch of the 74.8-MW Tokushima Tsuda Biomass Power Plant in December. Other operational facilities include the 20.5-MW Akita Biomass Plant and the 75-MW Kanda Biomass Plant. Renova is also constructing additional biomass plants, including the 75-MW Ishinomaki Hibarino Biomass facility and the 49.9-MW Karatsu Biomass facility.
