Coimbatore: Biogas plant to come up at Vellalore; tender likely next week

In Coimbatore, plans are underway to establish a biogas plant at Vellalore, a crucial step in reducing waste accumulation at the local dump yard.

As per news report published in The Times of India, tenders for the ₹68-crore plant would be called for next week, after a long wait. Expected to handle up to 100 tonnes of waste daily, the plant signifies a significant reduction in garbage disposal at the Vellalore site.

Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran announced that construction will commence shortly after the tender process. Currently, there are five smaller biogas plants within the city, each with a processing capacity of less than five tonnes per day. However, these are inadequate to manage the city’s waste output, which stands at approximately 1,200 tonnes per day. To alleviate pressure on the Vellalore dump yard, the corporation plans to establish additional biogas plants, aiming to utilize or sell the biogas produced.
