Ukraine’s first two biomethane producers reached a significant milestone, injecting their first one million cubic meters of biomethane into underground gas storage facilities by the end of last year, according to Heorgiy Heletukha, head of the country’s Bioenergy Association.
Vitagro began operations at its biomethane plant in September, while Gals Agro launched its facility in November. Building on this momentum, five additional biomethane plants are set to begin operations this year, potentially boosting annual production to over 100 million cubic meters.
Heletukha emphasized that expanding biomethane production could play a crucial role in strengthening Ukraine’s distributed energy generation system, providing more localized and sustainable energy sources.
At the same time, Ukraine’s State Recovery Agency is working to select communities for the construction of combined heat and power (CHP) plants. These facilities will use fuel derived from solid household or industrial waste, further advancing the country’s renewable energy efforts.
