EasyJet and Moeve sign MoU to promote SAF

Moeve and easyJet have joined forces to reduce the carbon footprint of air travel by signing a Memorandum of Understanding to promote sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The agreement secures easyJet’s access to SAF from 2025 to 2030 for its network in Spain, reported Biodiesel Magazine.

Moeve produces SAF at its La Rábida Energy Park in Huelva using used cooking oils. These second-generation biofuels can lower carbon dioxide emissions by up to 90% compared to traditional kerosene.

Álvaro Macarro, Moeve’s Director of Sustainable Aviation, highlighted the importance of SAF in achieving sustainability goals. “We believe SAF is the immediate solution for sustainable aviation and we supply it to major airports in the Iberian Peninsula and Canary Islands. This milestone with easyJet is vital for our joint decarbonisation journey,” he said.

Raminder Shergill, easyJet’s Director of Tax & Fuel Strategy, emphasized the airline’s commitment to sustainability. “We are focused on decarbonising our operations, and SAF is key to this mission. We’re pleased to partner with Moeve to reduce the environmental impact of our flights in Spain,” he said.

To secure SAF supplies, Moeve is building a new plant with its partners. This facility will have a flexible production capacity of 0.5 million metric tons of SAF and renewable diesel and is set to be the largest second-generation biofuels complex in southern Europe when it begins operations in 2026.

Moeve aims to produce 2.5 million metric tons of biofuels annually by 2030, including 800,000 metric tons of SAF. This output could fuel 2,000 flights around the world, advancing the company’s goal to be the top 2G biofuel producer in Spain and Portugal.

The agreement also supports easyJet’s net-zero roadmap. Earlier this month, the airline and its partner Airbus launched a business travel solution to help finance SAF and make it more affordable. In October, easyJet joined Project SkyPower, a consortium working to expand eSAF production in Europe.

The partnership aligns with the European Commission’s ‘Fit for 55’ package, which promotes aviation biofuel use in the EU. Targets include 2% SAF use by 2025, 6% by 2030, and 70% by 2050.

Additionally, the partnership supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 7 (Affordable and clean energy), SDG 8 (Decent work and economic growth), SDG 12 (Responsible consumption and production), and SDG 13 (Climate action).
