Maruti Suzuki India Limited on September 24, 2026 announced the commissioning of its first green hydrogen plant, a 300 kW electrolyser set up as a pilot at its Manesar facility in Haryana, to produce hydrogen for use as process fuel in its manufacturing operations.
The company disclosed the development in a press release filed with the stock exchanges. According to the release, the green hydrogen produced at the plant is blended with natural gas before being used as process fuel.
The company said the plant is designed to make fuller use of the solar power generated at its Manesar facility. Solar energy produced during holidays, which would otherwise go unused, is diverted to generate green hydrogen, which is then stored and later used in manufacturing operations.
Based on lessons from the pilot, the company plans to scale up the use of green hydrogen technology across its manufacturing facilities in Haryana and Gujarat. It said it continues to improve resource efficiency and optimise energy needs, drawing on parent company Suzuki Motor Corporation’s (SMC) philosophy of Sho-Sho-Kei-Tan-Bi, which translates to smaller, fewer, lighter, shorter and more beautiful.
Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said the company had adopted multiple renewable energy solutions for its manufacturing operations, much as it follows a multi-pathway approach for its products. He said the plant was aligned with the Government of India’s Green Hydrogen Mission and, together with the expansion of solar power and biogas and the installation of a battery energy storage system, reflected the company’s commitment to moving towards cleaner and sustainable energy.
Takeuchi said India was emerging as a manufacturing powerhouse and that its competitive position “may not depend solely on cost and quality, but also on CO2 intensity.” He said such initiatives were building capability to support a low-carbon, more energy-efficient manufacturing ecosystem, and that the company aims to cut the carbon footprint of its manufacturing operations from the present 6.15 lakh tonnes to 2.66 lakh tonnes in the financial year 2030-31, a target cited from its Annual Integrated Report 2025-26.
According to the company, its wider efforts to reduce emissions from manufacturing include in-house solar power plants, renewable energy procured from government sources, and power purchase agreements with third-party providers for solar and wind energy.
The company said it is at an advanced stage of setting up a 10 tonnes per day (TPD) biogas plant at its Kharkhoda facility, which will be commissioned within 2026-27. It also recently commissioned a 1 MWh battery energy storage system at the same facility.
Maruti Suzuki has begun integrating compressed biogas (CBG) as process fuel, and its board recently approved four CBG projects with an earmarked budget of Rs 561 crore. Separately, SMC, in partnership with organisations including the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and dairy industry unions, will set up 10 biogas plants across India, three of which are already operational in Gujarat.
The company said the pilot green hydrogen plant adds to its portfolio of clean energy sources for process fuels and marks another milestone in its move towards sustainable manufacturing.
