California updates biodiesel sustainability rules, welcomed by U.S. soybean growers

Washington: The American Soybean Association (ASA) has welcomed updated guidance issued by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for the state’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS), saying the revised sustainability rules will provide greater certainty for the biodiesel industry and U.S. soybean farmers supplying feedstock for renewable fuels.

The updated implementation guidance for the LCFS Sustainability Guardrails clarifies how biodiesel and other renewable fuel producers can demonstrate compliance with the programme’s sustainability requirements, addressing concerns raised by the ASA and other industry stakeholders.

ASA President Scott Metzger said the revised guidance provides much-needed clarity for farmers and the renewable fuels supply chain, enabling soybean growers to continue supplying feedstock for biodiesel production with greater confidence.

Under the updated framework, fuel producers can demonstrate compliance using supply chain documentation and mass balance accounting, rather than tracing soybeans back to individual farms. According to the association, the approach simplifies compliance while maintaining the environmental integrity of California’s low-carbon fuel programme.

The ASA said the clarification is expected to encourage continued investment in biodiesel and other low-carbon fuels by reducing regulatory uncertainty for producers, processors and feedstock suppliers. It added that practical compliance measures would help strengthen the renewable fuels value chain while supporting demand for U.S.-grown soybeans.
