Union Home Minister Amit Shah has backed a major biogas initiative as part of efforts to rejuvenate the Yamuna, highlighting the conversion of dairy waste into clean energy and organic manure as a crucial step toward reducing pollution in the river.
Chairing a high-level review meeting in New Delhi, Shah assessed the progress of ongoing Yamuna restoration projects and directed officials to accelerate implementation through a structured and time-bound action plan. He also called for regular monitoring to ensure measurable outcomes.
A key outcome of the meeting was the proposal for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the National Dairy Development Board. The proposed partnership aims to process dairy waste into biogas and organic manure, helping prevent waste from entering the Yamuna while creating renewable energy and promoting sustainable waste management.
The initiative is expected to address one of the significant sources of pollution affecting the river by converting waste into valuable bioenergy products instead of allowing it to contaminate water bodies.
The meeting also resolved that the governments of Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, along with concerned ministries and departments, would work in coordination under an integrated plan to restore the Yamuna.
Apart from the biogas initiative, discussions focused on speeding up desilting operations and strengthening monitoring of sewage treatment facilities and industrial discharge. Officials were instructed to ensure stricter enforcement to prevent untreated waste from entering the river.
Participants reiterated that restoring the Yamuna remains a top government priority, with the proposed dairy waste-to-biogas programme emerging as a significant component of the broader strategy to reduce pollution, generate renewable energy and improve the river’s ecological health.
