MOL to upgrade biogas plant for biomethane supply to Hungary’s gas grid

Hungarian energy major MOL Group has announced plans to upgrade its biogas plant in Szarvas to produce around seven million cubic metres of biomethane annually. The fuel will be injected directly into Hungary’s natural gas network once the project is completed.

The Szarvas facility, acquired by MOL in 2023 from BayWa AG, will become the company’s first biomethane production project. After the upgrade, it is expected to be the third operational biomethane plant in the country, gasworld repored.

Currently, the plant processes about 111,000 tonnes of organic waste each year, including waste from the meat industry, farm residues, and manure. It produces nearly 24 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually through cogeneration, with a peak capacity of around 4 megawatts.

Adam Horvath said that unlocking the full potential of biomethane will require strong policy support, clear regulations, and better coordination between the agriculture and energy sectors.

Biomethane is gaining attention as a clean energy source in Central and Eastern Europe due to the region’s strong agricultural base, established gas infrastructure, and growing industrial demand.

The Hungarian government has also stepped up support for the sector. In October 2025, the Ministry of Energy launched funding opportunities worth 40 billion Hungarian forints under the Jedlik Anyos Energy Programme to support biomethane and biogas projects. About half of this funding is earmarked for smaller projects and upgrades to existing facilities.

The broader programme, with a total value of 96 billion forints, is focused on increasing renewable energy use for heating and improving the efficiency of district heating systems across the country.
