Europe’s largest green hydrogen plant takes shape as Stegra installs final electrolyser

Stegra has completed the installation of the final electrolyser module at its large green hydrogen facility in Boden, marking a key step in building what is set to become Europe’s biggest plant of its kind, Renewables Now reported.

The company, earlier known as H2 Green Steel, said all 37 modules are now in place at the 740-megawatt facility. Once operational, the plant is expected to produce over 100,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, which will be used to convert iron ore into green iron for steel production.

The project uses alkaline water electrolysis technology, with equipment supplied by Thyssenkrupp Nucera. The company delivered 37 electrolysis units, each with a capacity of 20 MW, transported in around 800 containers to the site.

While installation of the modules has been completed, the company said further work is required before operations begin. The next stages will include pre-commissioning and commissioning to prepare the facility for full-scale production.

The project is part of a broader effort to produce green steel by using hydrogen instead of fossil fuels, reducing emissions in one of the most energy-intensive industries.
