Goa plans over 11,000 rooftop solar systems under central scheme

The Goa government plans to install 11,365 rooftop solar systems across the state in 2026–27 under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, aiming to expand renewable energy generation and reduce dependence on conventional power sources, Goemkarponn reported.

New and Renewable Energy Minister Ramakrishna Dhavalikar told the Goa Legislative Assembly that the state is also expanding solar installations on public buildings. He said 50 government buildings have already been fitted with solar panels, and work is underway to install such systems on around 383 more buildings with a combined capacity of about 30 MW.

According to data placed in the House, 2,961 rooftop solar systems have been installed in Goa during the past three years. Among the talukas, Salcete recorded the highest number with 1,054 installations, followed by Bardez with 693 and Tiswadi with 333. Other areas include Ponda with 286 systems, Mormugao with 234 and Bicholim with 124.

The minister said that up to January in the current financial year, the state generated more than 19.88 MW of green energy through such projects.

Dhavalikar also said the government is studying several new solar projects. These include an agri-solar project at the Goa College of Agriculture with a capacity of 294 kW and a floating solar project planned in the backwaters of Panaji that could generate 4.22 MWp.

Urban solar projects such as solar trees, solar walking sheds and solar carports are also being planned in Panaji, which together are expected to produce around 254 kW.

The minister said the state has also begun implementing Component B of the PM-KUSUM scheme to support farmers by providing off-grid solar pumps free of cost. So far, 182 solar pumps have been installed and another 18 are being set up.

He added that the government is also examining the possibility of generating 100 MW of electricity through vertical axis wind turbines as part of its plans to expand renewable energy sources in the state.
