India has recorded its lowest-ever discovered price for green hydrogen, bringing the country closer to its target of producing the fuel at $2 per kg, former G20 Sherpa and former NITI Aayog Chief Executive Officer Amitabh Kant said on Tuesday, ANI reported.
In a post on social media, Kant said a price of ₹279 per kg (around $3.08) was discovered in a tender for the supply of 10,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually to Numaligarh Refinery in Assam. He described the development as a major step forward in making green hydrogen more affordable.
According to ANI, Kant said government support and lower renewable power costs played a key role in achieving the milestone. He noted that incentives and cheaper renewable electricity have improved cost competitiveness and reflected the rapid progress of the sector. “India’s ambition to achieve green hydrogen at $2 per kg is not a distant dream anymore,” he said.
Last month, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy highlighted progress under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The mission aims to position India as a global hub for the production, use and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
According to the ministry, India’s green hydrogen production capacity is expected to reach 5 million metric tonnes per year by 2030. Under the production incentive scheme, 18 companies have been awarded a combined capacity of 8,62,000 tonnes per year. In addition, two companies have secured contracts for 20,000 tonnes per year under the incentive scheme for supplying green hydrogen to refineries.
The Solar Energy Corporation of India has also discovered prices for producing and supplying 7,24,000 tonnes per year of green ammonia, a derivative of green hydrogen, to 13 fertiliser units across the country.
India is expanding its renewable energy capacity through large-scale solar and wind projects and competitive tariff-based bidding, aiming to lower production costs and strengthen its position in the green hydrogen sector.
