German electrolysis specialist Sunfire to supply two 100 MW electrolyser plants for large-scale green hydrogen projects in Spain, located in Cartagena and Muskiz, reports Renewable Energy Magazine.
The Cartagena project, led by Repsol — Spain’s largest hydrogen producer — and Enagás Renovable, will see a 100 MW electrolyser installed near Repsol’s industrial complex. The Muskiz plant will be built at Petronor’s refinery in Bilbao, co-owned by Repsol and Kutxabank.
Nils Aldag, CEO of Sunfire, said, “Spain offers strong conditions for green hydrogen, and we recognised this potential early on. We are proud that Repsol is again choosing our proven pressurised alkaline technology to produce renewable hydrogen at scale. Together, we are advancing Spain’s leading role in green hydrogen.”
Each 100 MW plant will comprise ten 10 MW pressurised alkaline electrolyser modules, integrated into existing refinery operations and regional hydrogen infrastructure. Once operational in 2029, each plant is expected to produce up to 15,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually. The hydrogen will be used in Repsol’s industrial complexes to manufacture fuels with a substantially lower carbon footprint, avoiding up to 167,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per plant each year.
Sunfire previously delivered a 10 MW electrolyser to Basque Hydrogen, a project by Petronor, EVE, and Enagás Renovable, now being installed at the Port of Bilbao. The new 200 MW orders underline Sunfire’s reliability and capacity to deliver large-scale renewable hydrogen projects. The company also holds a 100 MW order from RWE in Lingen, Germany.
These projects mark a key step in Repsol’s transition from conventional to renewable hydrogen across its industrial sites. They are also aligned with Spain’s 2030 decarbonisation targets, supporting the growth of the domestic hydrogen market, reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels, and enhancing energy security.
