O&S Doors launches biomass-fuelled CHP plant to cut carbon emissions

Northern Ireland-based manufacturer O&S Doors has announced a £9 million investment to install a biomass-fuelled combined heat and power (CHP) system at its Dungannon facility, aimed at improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. The project has received £2.4 million in grant support from the Shared Island Sustainability Capital Grant Scheme, reports The Executive Office.

First Minister Michelle O’Neill and deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly welcomed the investment during a visit to the company. O&S Doors is the first business across the island of Ireland to adopt this type of system, which will convert MDF dust — a by-product of manufacturing — into energy for use in heating and production.

The CHP system will process more than 10,000 tonnes of MDF dust each year, material that is usually transported offsite for processing or disposal. The plant will generate around 6.3 million units of energy annually and produce 1 megawatt of electricity, reducing the company’s carbon emissions by about 1,500 tonnes per year.

Michelle O’Neill said the project demonstrates strong commitment to sustainable manufacturing, noting that turning waste into energy benefits both the environment and the local economy. Emma Little-Pengelly said the investment would help the company grow while supporting greener working practices and job creation.

The funding comes through the Shared Island Enterprise Scheme, delivered jointly by InterTradeIreland, Invest Northern Ireland and Enterprise Ireland. Economy Minister Caoimhe Archibald said the project shows how businesses across Northern Ireland can lead in sustainable innovation while supporting regional economic development.

O&S Doors said the new system supports its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2028. Chief Executive Officer John Toomey said the CHP project would reduce reliance on purchased electricity and cut emissions linked to transporting waste offsite, while also supporting future expansion plans at the Dungannon site.

Invest NI’s Chief Development Officer Alison Currie said the project highlights how investment in energy-efficient technology can boost competitiveness and green growth, adding that the development would bring wider benefits to the Mid Ulster economy.

O&S Doors is the largest manufacturer of wooden doors and related products in the UK and Ireland, supplying customers across Ireland, the UK and the United States.
