India: LanzaTech to set up ethanol plant in Uttar Pradesh

LanzaTech Global will be setting up a 300 tonne bagasse ethanol plant in Uttar Pradesh, as per the press release issued by the Company.

The company has received a contract from Spray Engineering Devices Ltd (SED) to build an ethanol manufacturing facility in Uttar Pradesh using sugarcane bagasse, an agricultural waste product, as its main raw material.

The proposed plant is designed to process up to 300 tonnes of bagasse per day and will produce ethanol for use in cleaner fuels and chemical products.

The project is part of SED’s “Smart Village” initiative to utilise renewable power and carbon resources to create economic value in rural areas. The project is among the first private-sector ethanol plants in India to use sugar industry waste under the PM JI-VAN Yojana, a central government programme that supports advanced ethanol production from agricultural and industrial waste.

Under the Smart Village model, lower-cost renewable electricity is expected to support the production of higher-value products such as clean fuels, aviation fuel alternatives and other industrial materials. The ethanol facility is also expected to generate biochar, accounting for about 5% to 10% of output, which can be used by local farmers to improve soil quality.

Vivek Verma, SED founder said farming and rural economies are entering a period of major change driven by renewable energy. Using non-food crop waste and animal by-products, can help reduce pollution from farming while building a more sustainable fuel and materials system.

LanzaTech develops systems that allow industrial facilities to convert carbon-based gases into ethanol. The company uses special microbes to turn gases such as carbon dioxide combined with clean hydrogen into ethanol. This ethanol can then be used to make everyday products as well as fuels such as aviation fuel and renewable diesel.

LanzaTech Chief Executive Officer Jennifer Holmgren said the partnership with SED strengthens the company’s presence in India and demonstrates how farm waste can be used on a commercial scale to produce ethanol.

By using existing supply chains, the Uttar Pradesh facility will prevent bagasse and other biomass waste from being burned and instead convert it into fuels, chemicals and raw materials. The project is expected to support local circular economies and improve long-term stability for sugarcane-growing communities. The plant is planned to start operations within two years.
