Nova Sustainable Fuels gets environmental approval for aviation fuel project in Goldboro

Nova Sustainable Fuels has received environmental assessment approval for the first phase of its plan to develop a renewable energy park in Goldboro, in Guysborough County, where it aims to produce sustainable aviation fuel, reports Biomass Magazine.

The project will use waste biomass from Nova Scotia’s forestry and forest-based industries to produce low-emission aviation fuel, offering an alternative to conventional petroleum-based fuels.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Timothy Halman said the project would support efforts to cut carbon emissions while creating jobs and supporting economic growth. He said initiatives of this kind also help strengthen Nova Scotia’s position as a leader in climate action, innovation and clean energy development.

The company will need to secure a second environmental assessment approval for the next phase of the project, which includes plans for a wind and solar power facility and a transmission line to provide renewable energy for fuel production.

Nova Sustainable Fuels estimates the project will generate about 1,000 jobs during the construction phase and up to 80 permanent jobs during operations, which are expected to continue until 2081. The company also expects the project to deliver direct and indirect economic benefits to local businesses, communities and residents.

As part of the approval, the project must meet 34 strict terms and conditions aimed at protecting the environment and public health. In addition, the company will be required to obtain separate industrial and water withdrawal approvals before moving ahead.
