Commercial operations of Sendai Port Biomass Power Plant begins

Sendai-ko Biomass Power GK — a joint venture backed by Sumitomo Corporation, Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd., Hokuriku Electric Power Company, and Sumitomo Corporation Tohoku — has begun commercial operations of the Sendai Port Biomass Power Plant after construction was completed in November 2025.

With a capacity of 112 MW and an expected annual output of about 800,000 MWh, equivalent to the yearly electricity consumption of roughly 260,000 households, the facility ranks among Japan’s largest dedicated biomass power plants. It is expected to ensure a stable, long-term supply of renewable energy for the Tohoku region and support progress toward carbon neutrality.

The plant uses wood-based biomass fuels such as pellets and chips sourced from thinning operations, mill residues, and lower-grade wood generated through forest management. All fuel materials come from forests certified under recognized forest certification schemes (*1). Sumitomo Corporation manages fuel procurement while ensuring proper forest resource utilization and full traceability. The project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and minimize environmental impact through renewable energy use, while maintaining sustainable operations with attention to forest resources.

Sumitomo Corporation
Sumitomo Corporation is targeting carbon neutrality across all group activities by 2050. Its renewable energy equity capacity reached about 2 GW as of March 2025, and the company plans to continue expanding renewable energy projects in Japan and abroad to support a decarbonized and sustainable society.

Tokyo Gas
Under its “Compass 2030” vision, Tokyo Gas Group is committed to achieving net-zero CO₂ emissions. It plans to continue working with partners to grow its renewable energy portfolio while maintaining capital efficiency, investment discipline, and close coordination with local communities.

Hokuriku Electric Power
Hokuriku Electric Power aims to increase its renewable energy capacity to more than 1 million kW — generating over 3 billion kWh annually — by the early 2030s compared to FY2018. The company will apply expertise from biomass co-combustion at its Tsuruga and Nanao Ohta thermal power stations to this project and continue initiatives supporting a carbon-neutral society.

Sumitomo Corporation Tohoku
Sumitomo Corporation Tohoku, a wholly owned regional integrated trading company of Sumitomo Corporation, is actively engaged in addressing climate change. Through participation in region-based renewable energy projects, it seeks to promote sustainable regional development and contribute to achieving carbon neutrality.
