Bunge launches $50 million biomass boiler project at Hungary facility

Global agribusiness company Bunge has announced a $50 million project to install a new biomass steam boiler at its oilseed processing plant in Martfűi. The company made the announcement on September 23, reports Biomass Magazine.

The new boiler will replace four existing steam units, providing all the plant’s steam needs with a single, more efficient system. Bunge said the system will convert biomass into heat with an efficiency of 86%, which will help improve reliability, reduce maintenance, and minimize production downtime.

The upgraded facility will include an automated ash collection system for easier handling and modern emission controls to reduce environmental impact and ensure the plant meets European Union industrial standards.

The plant will continue to use sunflower husks, a byproduct of Bunge’s operations, as fuel for the boiler. Construction is expected to be completed by September 2026, and the system is expected to be fully operational by early 2028.
