Global firm Kent to oversee major Saudi green hydrogen project

A global energy services company, Kent, has been selected to provide technical oversight for one of the world’s largest planned green hydrogen facilities. The company was appointed by the developer, ACWA Power, to serve as its representative for the Yanbu Green Hydrogen Hub in Saudi Arabia, reports Gulf Business.

This massive project is a key part of Saudi Arabia’s national strategy to shift toward clean energy. It will be built in the Red Sea port city of Yanbu and will handle the entire process of creating green hydrogen, from generating renewable power and treating water to producing ammonia and shipping it abroad.

When fully operational, the facility is designed to create up to 400,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen each year. This hydrogen will be converted into more than 2.2 million tonnes of green ammonia for export. With a massive production capacity, the Yanbu hub will be nearly twice the size of another major hydrogen project in the country, known as NEOM.

In its role, Kent will act as the technical advisor to ACWA Power during the initial design phase, which is being handled by a partnership between two other firms. Kent’s job is to make sure the plans meet international standards, are safe and practical to build, and that all the different parts of the project work together smoothly. The team will also help ACWA Power prepare for the next stage of the project: full-scale engineering and construction.

The Chief Executive of Kent, John Gilley, commented on the appointment, saying, “We are proud to be supporting ACWA Power on a project of such global significance. Our role allows us to use our deep technical knowledge and experience with complex energy projects to help build a safe and sustainable foundation for the hydrogen industry.”

Marco Arcelli, the Chief Executive of ACWA Power, also shared his thoughts. “The Yanbu Green Hydrogen Hub is a monumental step forward for Saudi Arabia’s clean energy goals and confirms our company’s position as a leader in this vital sector. Partnering with Kent will bring world-class technical oversight as we move closer to making the final decision to build.”

This project expands Kent’s involvement in clean energy projects in the Middle East and highlights its commitment to supporting the development of lower-carbon energy infrastructure worldwide.
