Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Thursday announced an allocation of $43.3 million for research and development in the green hydrogen sector, with $13 million already sanctioned for 23 projects. He made the remarks during a virtual address at the World Hydrogen India conference organised by S&P Global Commodity Insights in New Delhi, reports The Economic Times.
The government launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) in 2023 with an initial outlay of ₹19,744 crore, aiming to produce 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of green hydrogen annually by 2030. Joshi said achieving this goal will be supported by an additional 125 GW of renewable energy capacity, attracting nearly $100 billion in investment and creating over 600,000 jobs.
To date, India has commissioned 19 green hydrogen production projects with a combined capacity of over 4,300 tonnes per year, serving industries including steel, glass manufacturing, refineries, and transport. The government is also running five pilot projects to introduce green hydrogen in steel production and deploying 37 hydrogen-fuelled vehicles and nine refuelling stations along 10 major surface transport routes.
Under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) programme, auctions for the supply of 724,000 tonnes of green ammonia to the fertiliser industry were recently concluded, with prices discovered as low as ₹49.75 per kg (approximately 55 US cents), making India one of the most competitive markets globally.
The government has also incentivised domestic manufacturing of 3,000 MW of electrolysers annually, with over 1,100 MW already installed. In addition, more than 5,800 people have been certified in green hydrogen job roles, supporting workforce development. “India’s green hydrogen journey is moving from vision to action with incredible speed,” Joshi said.
